Why take German?

1. Think Globally:  Germany is economically the most important member of the European Union (EU).  Germany has the world’s third largest economy and is home to numerous international corporations.  German is also the language of commerce in the EU and is the most commonly spoken language in the EU. Consequently, German is the third most popular foreign language to learn in the world.  In Europe, it is the second most popular (after English). The world sees the importance of German.

2. Universities:  More majors require the study of German than other languages.  German students from Folsom High have gone on to further their studies (and language ability) at institutions such as UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, Duke and West Point, to name just a few.

3.  English is a Germanic Language:  German students will enhance their understanding of English through the learning of German.

4.  Cross-Curricular:  Students in German find connections in all of their classes, including math, history, and science.

5.  Cohesive class:  Students work with the same teacher throughout high school so that their progress is well documented year-to-year.

STUDENTS’ THOUGHTS:

I learned more about English in my German class!  It helped me grammatically and structurally with both.  I even understand Shakespeare now!

- Katie Ross (graduated from CSU Sonoma)

I feel more comfortable in this learning environment than any other class

throughout high school.

- Deanna Newell (after high school, lived in Germany)

Through four years of German with the same students, we have become a family!

- Candace Collins (currently living in Australia)

It helps me understand more terms in Music.

- John Liu (graduated from Duke University)

Traveling through Europe with friends from my class created life-long memories, allowed me to use my language, and gave me insight into a whole new world.       Can’t wait to go back!

-Sarah Korn (currently teaching in South Korea)
